“Whether you agree with him or not, Rand Paul is standing on the floor of the United States Senate right now fighting for your rights,” Fossel said. “It’s important to clearly delineate this Administration’s drone policy. As Senator Paul said, we passed the Bill of Rights to constrain the actions of government, not of individuals. Senator Paul deserves an answer to his questions, as do the American people. The President of the United States swore an oath to uphold all of our rights, not usurp them. It’s refreshing to see a U.S. Senator remind him of that, but it shouldn’t be necessary.”

The Maine Federation Of Young Republicans (www.maineyrs.com) are the Maine affiliate of the Young Republican National Federation, the oldest political youth organization in the country. The MFYR work to elect Republicans and advance conservative ideals across the Pine Tree State.

George Washington, our first President, was born on February 22, 1732. We observe his date of birth officially today and celebrate his legacy and accomplishments.

Perhaps the greatest part of Washington’s legacy was his willingness to leave power. Rarely – if ever – before in human history had the leader of a nation walked away so graciously. He established a precedent that would remain in place for over 140 years and eventually be codified in the 22nd Amendment. He knew that the greatest limit to the powers of the Presidency – even greater than the system of checks and balances established in our Constitution – was time.

He was further wise enough to recognize that his job as President was not to preserver his own power, but to preserve our liberty, as he stated in his Farewell Address:

Liberty itself will find in such a government, with powers properly distributed and adjusted, its surest guardian.

Thank you, George Washington, for your wise words and actions that established the United States as the bulwark of liberty in the world. It is up to all of us to preserve that legacy today.
